Jo Buzza and Daniel Hayne met while working in a community mental health service in Ipswich, QLD. We learned a lot about mental health work during our time in the public sector, and we met many different people from all walks of life, all with their own unique stories, struggles, and strengths.
After many long conversations together about our experiences and what makes for good mental health, we decided to branch out on our own to combine what we had learned with some of our own innovations. From this, The Two Trees Psychotherapy was born: a mental health clinic that offers high quality, client-centred individual and relationship therapy, groups, supervision, training, and more.
The name ‘The Two Trees’ comes from our shared love of J. R. R. Tolkien’s fantasy stories. Tolkien’s Silmarillion tells the story of two great light-bearing trees, golden Laurelin and silver Telperion, created by the angel Yavanna to illuminate the ancient paradise of Valinor. The trees are eventually destroyed by the evil Melkor, and only Laurelin’s last fruit and Telperion’s last flower survive. Yavanna and her fellow angels, in their grief, turn these into the sun and the moon.
This story has been interpreted in many ways by Tolkien fans. To us, the destruction of Laurelin and Telperion represents the symbolic death that many of us go through when faced with difficult life events and mental health crises. Their rebirth as the sun and moon represents the way that we can find new strength and a better life through these struggles.
It’s a bit cheesy, but we like it – and our job is to help you find this strength.
Welcome to The Two Trees.
